Meditation & Grounding

Meditation
for Witches

It's not what you think. And you're probably already doing it.

Let me guess: someone told you meditation is essential for your practice, and now you're picturing yourself sitting perfectly still for an hour with a completely empty mind, failing within thirty seconds, and giving up entirely.

That's not what meditation is. And that picture is why so many people never start.

In my practice, meditation is one of the most useful skills I've developed, but not because I'm sitting in silence for hours. It's because it trained my mind to focus, and that focus is what makes everything else work better.

What Meditation Actually Is

At its core, meditation is just deliberate, focused awareness. That's it. It's the practice of bringing your attention somewhere on purpose and noticing when it wanders.

In magickal practice, this matters more than most people realize. The core of any spellwork is moving energy: raising it, focusing it, and directing it outward with intention. A scattered mind makes that significantly harder. A trained mind makes it feel almost effortless.

Meditation also opens up something that's harder to explain but very real once you experience it: heightened intuitive awareness. It's not passive. It's an active reaching out with your senses, both the ones you know about and the ones you're still discovering.

You Don't Have to Empty Your Mind

This is the biggest myth that stops people before they even begin. You are not trying to think nothing. That's not a real thing humans can do, and it's not the goal.

When you meditate, your mind will wander. That's fine. The practice is noticing that it wandered and gently bringing it back. That's the whole thing. You're not failing when your thoughts drift, you're doing exactly what you're supposed to be doing every time you catch it and return.

Start simple: sit somewhere comfortable, close your eyes, and focus on your breathing. Not controlling it, just noticing it. When something else comes into your head, let it pass and come back to the breath. Even five minutes of this daily will strengthen your focus in ways that show up directly in your spellwork.

You Might Already Be Meditating

Here's something worth sitting with: do you ever go for a walk and lose track of time? Zone out while doing something repetitive? Get absorbed watching rain or a candle flame?

That's an altered state of awareness. That's the territory meditation works in.

No substances, no special equipment, no perfect environment required. Breathing, chanting, moving, even dancing can shift your consciousness into that space. The more you practice reaching it intentionally, the easier it becomes to access on purpose.

What Grounding Has to Do With It

Grounding and meditation go hand in hand, and if you're doing any kind of energetic work, you need to understand both.

Grounding means returning yourself to ordinary consciousness after magickal work. It also means releasing excess energy so it doesn't linger in a way that can cause problems. Think of it like unplugging after a big working rather than leaving the current running.

The simplest grounding technique: shake your hands out, palms facing down toward the floor or earth. Visualize whatever you've raised flowing back out and returning to where it came from. It takes thirty seconds and it matters.

You also want to ground before ritual, not just after. Grounding before helps you avoid draining your own energy by centering yourself first. Grounding after prevents overload.

The Easiest Grounding Practice You Can Start Today

Go outside. Alone, if you can.

That sounds too simple, but it works. Nature reconnects you to the earth in a way that's harder to access indoors. You don't need to do anything specific. Sit, walk, observe. Watch a bee work a flower. Listen without trying to interpret. Let your mind settle without giving it a task.

In a lot of traditions, spending time in natural spaces is considered a form of meditation in itself, because it brings you into the present moment without effort. Modern life pulls us constantly forward. Nature pulls us into right now.

Where to Go From Here

Once you've got a basic breathing practice and a grounding habit, you can start layering in visualization, energy sensing, and guided journeying. But honestly? Start with five minutes of breath focus in the morning and five minutes outside every day. That alone will change how your practice feels within a few weeks.
